How To Make Butter Fly!

This tutorial will take you through the basic steps for making a continuously moving ‘object’ such as a walking person or a flying bird. I choose to make a pack of butter fly because I liked the joke :o). This tutorial is about the basic steps for creating the movement and not about creating the artwork. If you have never used Flash before I suggest you work through the tutorial ‘Flash MX for Beginners’ as I have assumed some basic knowledge of Flash.

The tutorial was created in Flash MX but will also work if your using Flash 8

Step 1: Setting UP THE STAGE.

Open up Flash and create a new stage about 500px by 300px should give you enough room to fly around in. Set the frame rate to 31 frames per second.

Select the black arrow from the tool bar.

In your timeline rename layer 1 “butter”.

Step 2: START DRAWING.

Using the Rectangle tool draw a shape that looks a bit like a pack of butter. I also added a little bit of corner to the shape for a better effect. You can of course create your image using a different graphics programme and then import that image into Flash.

Select the ‘butter’ on the stage and then press F8 to bring up the “Convert to Symbol” box. Give it the name ‘butter’ and the behaviour “Movie Clip”. Click OK.

The ‘buttter’ will now have a blue line around it indicating that it is now a Movie Clip. Double click on the newly made ‘butter’ Movie Clip to go to its sub timeline. The info bar will change to read “Scene 1 Butter” and you will see a new timeline.

Again rename layer 1 ‘butter’ and lock the layer by clicking on the small dot next to the layer name and below the padlock icon. The dot will change into a padlock. This ensures that you don’t accidentally select the butter image.

Step 3: MAKE THE WINGS.

Make a new layer and rename it ‘wing one’. Draw a wing shape and position it appropriately in relation to the butter shape. Select the wing shape and create a new Movie Clip as we did in step 5 except this time you will select the wing shape and call the movie clip wingone.

Double click on the newly created wingone movie clip. Again the info bar will change to show we are now in a sub of the sub … Scene 1 – butter – wingone. Again you will see a new timeline appear.

On Layer 1 move along the timeline to frame 70 and right mouse click then select “Insert Keyframe”.

You will see that a grey line appears between frame 1 and frame 70 with a black dot in frame 1 and frame 70 indicating that they are now keyframes.

Right click anywhere between frame 1 and 70 and select “Create Motion Tween”.

Make sure that the keyframe in frame 70 has the motion tween on it. Click in frame 70 so that it shows as a black frame then on the stage select the wing and then select the “free transform tool”.

The shape will now have a black border that will allow you to ‘reshape’ it. In the middle of this black border you will see a white circle, this is the image anchor point. Move this circle to the bottom centre of the shape. This anchor point needs to be in the same place in each keyframe (I have never managed to find out how to make Flash keep this anchor point properly across keyframes so this is my ‘cheat’: Right click on frame 70 and choose “copy frames”, go to frame 1 right click and choose “paste frames” now both frames have the same anchor point.) Go back to frame 70.

From the top middle black square drag the top of the shape down to just past half way.

Insert a new keyframe at frame 115. (Right click choose “Insert Keyframe”.) Another nice little cheat: we want the wing to return to its starting point so, go to frame 1 right click and choose “copy frame” go back to frame 115 right click and choose “paste frame” hey presto we’re back where we started with a nice smooth movement!

Time to see some action! Click on Scene 1 in the info bar to take yourself back to the main stage. Hit Ctrl Enter to preview your butter flying, with one wing at the moment.

Close the preview window to return to the main stage. Double click on the butter Movie clip to go back into the first level sub clip. Info bar should read “Scene 1 – Butter”

Step 4: MAKE THE SECOND WING.

Insert a new layer call it ‘wing two’. Drag this layer down so that it’s at the bottom of the layer list. The second wing will now be behind the butter, as it should be.

Now you can either draw a new wing or copy wing one. To copy wing one double click on the ‘wingone’ Movie clip until you see the info bar telling you your at Tween 1, basically you will no longer go anywhere when you double click.

Select the wing shape and copy it, either use right click copy or ctrl c.

Go back to the ‘butter’ Movie clip by clicking on butter from the info bar.

Select layer wingtwo then click anywhere on the stage and paste the wingone copy. Position it appropriately.

Lock “wing one” and “butter” layers.

Make a new Movie Clip from “wing two” (step 8).

Repeat steps 9 to 16 for movie clip wing two to create the second wings movement.

Now we have butter that’s wings are moving but it’s not flying anywhere yet!

You should now be in the main stage area “Scene 1”.

Adjust the position of the butter Movie clip to a suitable starting place for instance the top left of the stage.

Insert a keyframe at frame 120 and right click to create the motion tween. Whilst on frame 120 move the Movie Clip to its finishing point for instance the bottom right corner.

Hit Ctrl enter to preview your movie.

To publish your final movie select File – Publish.

You can get much more creative in the movement of the clip by using a motion guide.

The frame rate can be changed to suit your animation as can the setting of the keyframes. And much more detail can, of course be added.

That’s it.
Of course this is just the very basic principle, there are many great effects that can be achieved once you’ve got the basics working.

Creating Complex Shapes with Corel DRAW!

This tutorial will show you how to create complex shapes in Corel DRAW! I used Corel DRAW! 7.0 for Windows. Some things may be done differently with other versions.

It's fairly easy to create simple shapes with a vector drawing program such as Corel DRAW!. There are built-in tools for creating circles, ellipses, squares, rectangles and polygons, etc... You may wonder, though, how to create more complex shapes. The tools to help with this are there, as well, they're just not as obvious.

In this tutorial I'll demonstrate how to center objects, how to "combine" more than one shape to cut one shape from another and how to "weld" several shapes into one. I'll also show you how to duplicate objects while changing their size and how to rotate an object with its center of rotation changed so as to duplicate shapes around a single point that you determine.

Before we begin, let's take a look at the shape we'll be creating (see figure 5.1).

You may recognize this shape as the shape that's used to signify radioactivity. I had this shape in mind for a new design that I wanted to use here at GrafX Design. You'll see it showing up here-and-there at the bottom of various pages.

At first glance you may not see how this shape can be created with circles and triangles. Take a look at figure 5.2, though, and you'll note that the radioactive symbol is made up of an outer circle (shown in blue), an inner circle (in red) and three triangles (in yellow).

Start out by opening a new image.

NOTE: If you don't see the rulers at the top and left of the main window--choose View, Rulers. This will turn the rulers on.

To help with the exact placement of the different objects that make up the final shape you can set the guidelines. Simply click-and-drag down from the ruler at the top to create a horizontal guideline, and click-and-drag from the ruler at the left to create a vertical guideline (see figure 5.3).

You want the quidelines to dissect the image in the center so set the vertical guideline at 4.25 inches (half of 8.5 inches, the width of the page) and set the horizontal guideline at 5.50 inches (half of 11 inches, the length of the page). You can see the coordinates of the guidelines change, as you move them, in the lower left of the screen.

Now you're ready to begin drawing.

Select the Ellipse tool and, while holding down the CTRL key to constrain the ellipse to a circle, draw a circle about 2.5 inches in diameter.

Choose Arrange, Align and Distribute. This will bring up the Align and Distribute dialog box. Choose the Align tab, select Center of Page and click OK. Your circle should now be centered over the guidelines.

Choose Arrange, Transform, Scale and Mirror to bring up the Scale and Mirror dialog box (see figure 5.4).

Make sure there's a checkmark in the Proportional checkbox and enter 80% beside the H in the Scale window (with Proportional checked you won't need to set both the H, horizontal, and the V, vertical. Click on the Apply to Duplicate button.

Change the 80% to 20% and click the Apply to Duplicate button again. You should now have 3 centered circles (see figure 5.5). Select the Pick tool and click away from the circles to de-select them.

Click on the outside circle, to select it, and then SHIFT-click the second circle to select it as well.

Choose Arrange, Combine. Nothing seems to have happened, but the inner circle has been cut away from the outer circle leaving a donut shape with a large hole in it. If you select a fill color now you'll see that this is true because the second circle doesn't fill in (see figure 5.6).

What you've just done is you've created a new shape from two separate shapes.

Double-click the Polygon tool to bring up the Options dialog box. Set the shape to polygon and the number of points/sides to 3.

Place the cursor in the middle of the circles and click-and-drag up and to the left to create a triangle. It should be big enough to span the distance between the small circle and the new circular shape (see figure 5.7).

Choose Layout, Snap to Guidelines.

You may want to zoom in to about 400% to help with the following steps.

Select the Pick tool and use it to select the triangle shape. Move the shape into position with its bottom corner at the center of the circles (see figure 5.8).

With the Pick tool still selected, click on the triangle again to get the rotation arrows. Move the center of revolution to the same point as the bottom of the triangle (see figure 5.9).

The center of revolution is a small circle with a dot in it. It will originally show up in the center of the triangle. You can click-and-drag it into place. Since the snap-to-guidelines is set it will snap into place in the center of the guidelines.

You should still have the Scale and Mirror dialog box open. Choose Rotation. Set the Angle to 120 deg. and click the Apply to Duplicate button to create a second triangle. Click the Apply to Duplicate button once more to create a third triangle (see figure 5.10).

Click anywhere to clear the selection and then click-and-drag a marquee around all of the shapes to select all of the objects.

Near the top-right of the screen you should see the Weld icon (see figure 5.11).

Clicking on this icon will complete the image (see figure 5.12).

Make sure you keep a copy of the vector drawing i.e. save the image as a CDR file so you can go back and make changes easily later on.

Of course, this final image was only really half of the design I had envisioned. To complete the design I exported the image as an EPS file and opened it in Photoshop. I then added some texture using Auto/FX. I played with the color, contrast and brightness, and lighting until I had the exact texture I wanted. I also added an Inner Bevel using Alien Skin's Eye Candy. Finally, I added a custom radial gradient behind the shape. There was still something missing, though, so to finish up I went back to Corel DRAW! and I created some text along a circular path and exported that, too. I then opened the text in Photoshop and cut-and-pasted it over the radioactive image to arrive at the completed design you see below (figure 5.13).

Creating Drop Shadows with Corel DRAW!

This tutorial will show you how to create drop shadows in Corel DRAW! I used Corel DRAW! 7.0 for Windows. Some things may be done differently with other versions.

Drop shadows are not something you'd expect to be able to do in a vector based drawing program. Although the shadows created with this technique differ from those done with a paint program such as Photoshop they are, nevertheless, a pretty cool effect.

Open a new graphic. Choose the text tool and enter your text. Choose the pick tool to select the text. Use Text, Format Text to bring up the Format Text dialog box.

Choose a size and font for your text. I used 50.0 points and the Dauphin font (see figure 1.1).

Choose Edit, Copy then Edit, Paste. Move the top copy aside and use Edit, Paste to create a third copy. Move this one aside, as well (see figure 1.2)

With this last copy still selected choose a light gray color. This will change the last copy to light gray.

Move one of the other copies over the light gray one so that it's a little above and to the left of the light gray copy. If you have to, use Arrange, Order, Forward one so that the black copy is above the light gray one (see figure 1.3)

Use the pick tool to select both the light gray and the black copies.

Choose Effects, Blend to bring up the Blend menu. I left the default 20 steps and clicked Apply to get figure 1.4.

Finally, use the pick tool to select the last copy and, with it selected, changes its color to the color you want the the text to be. Move it into place over the blended copies to arrive at something like figure 1.5.

Creating 3D Buttons with Corel DRAW!

This tutorial will show you how to create 3D buttons in Corel DRAW! I used Corel DRAW! 7.0 for Windows. Some things may be done differently with other versions.

The buttons you'll draw during this tutorial were inspired by my stereo. I originally created these buttons for the first Earth Orbit Consulting web site. I subsequently went on to create the first GrafX Design online tutorial describing how I had created these buttons with Paint Shop Pro. To show you how some graphics can be created with a vector program as easily as they can be with a paint program, I'm re-creating that first tutorial here.

This technique involves a little more effort than the first Corel DRAW! tutorial though it's still rather simple.

Open a new graphic. Choose the ellipse tool and, while holding down the Ctrl key to constrain the ratio, draw a circle about 2.5 inches in diameter at the left of the page.

Select the pick tool and, with the circle selected, hit Ctrl-c and Ctrl-v to copy and paste the circle. Use the right cursor key to move the copy to the right of the page. (see figure 2.1).

Select the rectangle tool and draw a rectangle between the two circles. Make sure that the corners of the rectangle meet with the circles (see figure 2.2)

Use the pick tool to draw a marquee around both circles and the rectangle. Click the intersection icon. This will only create the intersection of the left-most circle and the rectangle (see figure 2.3).

Use the pick tool to draw another marquee around the right-most circle and the rectangle. Click the intersect icon again. You should now have two intersections with the rectangle. Choose the circles, one at a time, and delete them. This should leave you with something like figure 2.4.

Use the pick tool to select the left-most curve and fill this object with a light gray. Select the right-most curve and fill this object with a dark gray (see figure 2.5).

Select the fill tool and choose the gradient tool from the flyout menu. This will bring up the Fountain Fill dialog box. Under Color blend, select Custom. This will change the Fountain Fill dialog box so that it resembles figure 2.6.

Add another point to the blend by double-clicking above the rectangular blend window. Change the middle point (the one you just added) to a light gray by clicking on the Current pulldown menu (it's just above the custom blend window). Change the color at both of the outside points to dark gray. Set the Angle to 90 and adjust the middle point so that your blend resembles the one in figure 2.6. Click OK.

NOTE: The custom blend starts out with only a beginning and an ending point. You can add more points to create your custom blend by double-clicking above the blend window. These points can also be moved by clicking and dragging.

Select the button with the pick tool and, using the outline tool flyout menu, set the outline to none.

Use Arrange, Transform, Scale and Mirror to resize the button.

At this point you might want to save the button (see figure 2.7).

I exported the button as a JPG with the following settings in the Bitmap Export dialog box. The really important settings to remember are the Maintain aspect ratio and Super-sampling.

Use the text tool to add some text to your button. I used the Bedrock font. You may choose to copy and paste the text with a different color to add a highlight (see figure 2.9).

Export the final button as a web-ready JPG and make sure you keep a copy of the vector drawing i.e. save the image as a CDR file so you can go back and make changes easily later on.

Creating Contoured Text with Corel DRAW!

This tutorial will show you how to create Contoured Text in Corel DRAW! I used Corel DRAW! 7.0 for Windows. Some things may be done differently with other versions.

I've had a number of people write and ask how the title on the Corel DRAW! box is done. You know the look. It has black text surrounded by a gold gradient. The process is quite simple and, using it, you can achieve some really cool effects.

Open a new graphic. Choose the Text tool and enter some text. I used the Bedrock font at 200 points (see figure 3.1).

Choose Effects, Contour which will bring up the Contour roll-up (see figure 3.2).

Choose a color for the outline and the fill of the contour. Use a color for the fill that's different than the color of the text. This will make it easier to select the contour object later.

Choose the other tab in the contour roll-up and set the type to outside, the offset to 0.07 and the steps to 1.

Select the Pick tool to highlight the text and activate the Apply button in the contour roll-up.

Click Apply. This will give you an outline, or contour, around the text (see figure 3.3).

Choose Arrange, Separate. This will break the contour away from the text and enable you to apply effects directly to the contour object.

De-select the text by left-clicking outside of the current selection.

Select the contour by left-clicking on it with the Pick tool.

NOTE: If you have trouble selecting the contour and find that you keep selecting the text, send the text to the back after selecting it. This will make selecting the contour much easier. You can move the contour to the back after selecting it.

With the contour selected it's time to lay some effects on it.

Click the Fill tool icon and select the Fountain Fill Dialog option. This will bring up the Fountain Fill Dialog box (see figure 3.4)

Set the left end point to a pastel blue and add another white point and a brown point next to each other somewhere towards the middle. Set the Angle to -90.0 degrees. Click OK.

You should now have something like figure 3.5.

You can add a border around the contour by selecting the Outline tool and selecting a size for the outline. I chose a slim outline as seen in figure 3.6.

You can apply many different effects this way, including the gold outline seen on the Corel DRAW! box.

Figure 3.7 demonstrates a bitmap fill applied to the text.

Play around with this and see what you can come up with and, above all, have fun.

Export the final image as a web-ready JPG or GIF and make sure you keep a copy of the vector drawing i.e. save the image as a CDR file so you can go back and make changes easily later on.

Creating 3D Textured Text with Corel DRAW!

This tutorial will show you how to create 3D Textured Text in Corel DRAW! I used Corel DRAW! 7.0 for Windows. Some things may be done differently with other versions.

I'm always exploring textures and materials effects in the various programs I use. I like creating gold, metal, wood, stone, etc... Normally I use all sorts of filters and tricks to get the look just right and I usually use a bitmap program such as Photoshop. I thought it might be fun, though, to try and see if something like this could be done with a vector program such as Corel DRAW! The following tutorial is the result. Let me know what you think.

The process is quite simple and, using it, you can achieve some really cool effects. I'll be demonstrating how to create "Hot Rocks" or Lava text. All of the effects can be accomplished using the files that come with Corel DRAW!

Open a new graphic. Select the Text tool and enter some text. I used the Braggadocio font at 75 points (see figure 4.1).

You'll want to use a chunky font for this stone look. Later you can try different fonts and fills to see what you can come up with.

I wanted to give the text some perspective as well as adding 3-dimensionality to it.

Use the Pick tool to select the text and Choose Effects, Add Perspective. This will surround the text with a red grid and put nodes at the corners (see figure 4.2).

Grab the top corners and move them in and up until you have something like figure 4.3.

You may notice the perspective marker, a small black "X", appear above the text. Once you're happy with the perspective click on the Pick tool again to clear the grid.

It's time to add the 3D effects. Choose Effects, Extrude to bring up the Extrude dialog box (see figure 4.4).

Select the Extrude icon and enter Small Back with a Depth of 10.

Select the Rotation icon and play around until you get a view that you like (see figure 4.5). You can see the text change every time you click the Apply button, so play around.

TIP: You might want to change the color of the text to a light gray so that you can see the angles and side more clearly.

You can see the actual x,y,z values by clicking on the small paper icon to the right of the red Corel 3D rotation image. The values I ended up with were 19, 29, 5.

Now add some lighting. I added all three lights. You can see their placement in figure 4.6.

Besides the placement you can play with the intensity of the lights. I set the first to 68, the second to 41 and the third to 86. Again, you'll want to play with these values to suit your particular image.

Now that the image is ready you can fill it with a texture. Select the Fill tool and hold it down until the flyout menu appears. Select the texture fill (it kinda looks like a black and white cloud image) which will bring up the texture dialog box (see figure 4.7).

I chose the Painted Stucco texture from Samples 7. There are a lot of different textures, though, so take a few minutes to go through the libraries and find something you like. I thought this texture looked like hot lava rock. Take a look at the final image (figure 4.8) and see what you think.

I exported the image as a JPG using Custom for the Size with 400 for the Width and setting the Maintain aspect ratio. I set the Resolution to 96 (both Horizontal and Vertical) and chose Super-sampling for the Anti-aliasing method. In the JPG Export dialog box I set the Quality to around 40.

Play around with some of the effects in this tutorial and see what you can come up with and, above all, have fun.

Make sure you keep a copy of the vector drawing i.e. save the image as a CDR file so you can go back and make changes easily later on.

Animated GIFs

This tutorial will demonstrate how you can create an Animated GIF logo. I used Corel DRAW! 7.0 for Windows for this technique. Some things may be done differently with other versions.

Putting a New Spin on Your Logo

I'll be the first to admit that I'm probably the last person to jump on the "Animated GIF" bandwagon. To be honest, I didn't really see the potential for animated GIFs. Most of the early images I saw were kind of cheesy. On top of that, I prefer keeping my images' download time to a minimum, and animated GIFs can get rather large very quickly.

Recently, though, I've seen the light. Done right, animated GIFs can be pretty cool. And, with today's GIF animation software, animated image file size can be kept quite reasonable. Animated GIFs can be real attention-getters on banner ads, can really add to the appeal of a static logo, and they can certainly add some pizzazz to a web page.

Animated 3D text has become so popular on the web, in fact, that there are now several dedicated programs available for you to choose from. These programs, produced by software companies such as Xara and Ulead, make the creation of animated 3D text as simple as point-and-click.

What if you need to do more than animate simple text? Normally you might think of resorting to a dedicated 3D-rendering program. These programs can be expensive, though, and they often have pretty steep learning curves. So what can you do? Well, you can use Corel DRAW! to create the frames for your animated masterpiece. That's right! Corel DRAW! has all the features necessary to help you create a 3D animated logo.

Here's how you can use the extrusion features to give depth to, light, and spin your creation...

Open a new graphic in Corel DRAW! (I'm using version 7, but the method should translate well to other versions).

I'll be creating a simple logo using the first letters of GrafX Design, my design company.

First I entered the text using the Text tool. I then selected the text by clicking on the Pick tool. This enabled me to change the font and the size of the text. I chose Braggadocio at 72 points.

Because I didn't want to create just simple text, but rather I wanted a logo, I decided to cut the text out of a simple oval shape. To do that, I selected the Ellipse tool and dragged an oval shape around the text.

To line these elements up, marquee-select them all with the Pick tool and choose Arrange, Align and Distribute. In the Align and distribute dialog box, check Center of Page and click OK.

With the elements still selected, click the Combine button on the property bar. This will combine, or cutout, the text from the oval.

You can change the color of the oval logo by left-clicking a color on the color palette. I choose a light blue color (see figure 9.1).

Now that the logo design is complete (as simple as it is), it's time to extrude the image, light it, and start creating the separate frames you'll need in order to complete the animation.

Choose Effects, Extrude to bring up the Extrude dialog box (see figure 9.2). This is where you'll do most of the work needed to create the frames of your spinning animation.

In this dialog box you'll see 5 tabs. The first three, Extrude, Rotate, and Lighting are the ones you'll need to use to create the frames for your animation.

The first thing you should do is extrude the logo. This process gives your logo some depth, i.e. it adds the 3rd dimension to your image.

Click on the first tab if it's not already active. You can now set the basic shape, viewpoint, and depth of your image. I set the shape to "Small Back," the viewpoint to "VP Locked To Object," and the depth to 2.0. You can play around with the various choices until you get the look you're after. When you're done, click Apply.

The next thing you will do is create the lighting.

Click the third tab. Turn on the first light by clicking the first lightbulb icon (or Light switch 1).

You can now position the light by dragging the small black icon around the 3D grid. You must place the icon on an intersection. I chose the upper-right corner. Once you've chosen the position for your light, click Apply.

At this point you won't really see much difference in your image. It's coming, though.

Click on the 2nd tab. This option enables you to rotate the logo in 3D space. You'll notice the Corel symbol that's visible in the middle of the dialog box (see figure 9.3).

This symbol can be dragged around with the mouse, and its position will correspond to the position of your image in 3D space once you click Apply. Changing the position in this manner is a lot of fun. However, you'll need to be more exacting when creating your frames. Below and to the right of the Corel symbol is a small, bent-cornered, rectangular icon. Clicking on this icon will replace the Corel symbol with a set of coordinates, or rotation values. The first controls the rotation about the x-axis, the second about the y-axis and the third about the z-axis. Because I'll be spinning my logo around the y-axis, I'll only need to change the values for number 2.

Before you start to apply the rotation values you should save the first frame. Obviously the first frame doesn't need to be rotated.

Before saving the first frame, though, create a white (or some other color, if you prefer) bounding box around your logo image. You'll need to do this because of the way Corel DRAW! saves an image. When Corel DRAW! saves an image it doesn't keep all of the white space you see around the onscreen representation. Instead, all of that white space is cropped off. It's best to have all of the frames of your animation the same size, and adding the bounding box will assure that this is the case.

Select the Rectangle tool and draw a box around your image. It doesn't have to be much bigger than the image but it should give you a little extra elbowroom.

On the color palette, left-click the color that you want the box to be. This hides your logo, of course. Press CTRL-Page Down until the box moves to the back and your logo is again visible.

To center everything again, marquee-select all of the objects and then select Arrange, Align and Distribute. Place a check mark in the Center of Page box and click OK.

To save the first frame of your animation, choose File, Export. In the Export dialog box, choose a folder in which to store the image, give your file a name, and choose a file type. I like to use the BMP file format, (because it's 24-bit and it's a format most animation programs recognize) and let the animation program handle the palette. I also like to name the frames in sequence. I started this sequence as GD00.BMP.

Click Export to bring up the Bitmap Export dialog box.

Set the colors to 16 Million Colors. Set the Size to Custom and place a checkmark in the Maintain Aspect Ratio box. You can leave the Resolution at anywhere from 72 dpi to 96 dpi because the animation is intended for screen viewing. I always like to set Anti-aliasing to Super-sampling. Once you have entered all of the settings, click OK to save the image.

Now you're ready to rotate the logo.

By adding the bounding box you de-selected the logo. Simply use the Pick tool to re-select the logo.

Back at the Extrude dialog box, click Edit and enter 10 in the 2nd spin control. Click Apply to apply the rotation. You could rotate the logo by a value of 1 rather than 10 each time, and this would result in an extremely smooth animation. However, it would also result in an unacceptably large final file size.

The 2nd frame (see figure 9.4) is ready to be saved. Not so bad, eh?

Choose File, Export and name the second frame. I named mine GD01.BMP. You'll need to select the Maintain Aspect Ratio and Super-sampling boxes again.

That completes the 2nd frame.

Back at the Export dialog box, click Edit and enter 20 in the 2nd spin control. Export this frame.

Continue on until you hit the value 70. You'll notice that the image is now at 90 degrees (see figure 9.5).

This occurs because Corel DRAW uses the values -100 to 100 for the rotation values and not, as you might expect, 0-360 degrees.

After saving the frame with the value at 70, start back down using negative values. Start with -60, then -50, etc, until you hit -10. Although, technically, using these values won't spin the logo so that you see the back of it, using these numbers will give your animation the appearance of spinning 360 degrees around the y-axis.

You should now have 14 frames numbering 00 through 13. You're ready to animate your logo!

It's time to fire up your animation program. I'm currently using Ulead's GIF Animator. I like it because it's relatively easy to use-it offers animation and optimization wizards, has good palette control, and accepts a fairly wide range of file formats.

After opening GIF Animator, I created the final animation, which can be seen below. Because the wizards work so well, I simply chose to use all of the defaults.

When the animation program opens, it offers you a chance to use the Animation Wizard. This wizard enables you to Add Images/Videos. From this first dialog box, you can add the images, or frames of your animation. Simply point to the folder where you stored the separate frames. There's a small quirk, though. The frames will not be in sequence unless you follow this simple rule: Choose the last file in the sequence and then, while holding down the shift key, click on the first filename in the sequence. Click OPEN. You can click through the remaining choices by choosing Next each time. The one place you might want to stray from the default is the Frame Duration. I like my animations to run more quickly than the default and usually choose 10/100's of a second rather than the 25/100's. In the last dialog box, choose Finish to close the wizard.

To see how your animation will appear, click on the Start Preview button. You'll see your animation for the first time. Pretty cool, eh?

If everything looks okay, you can choose File, Optimization Wizard. Again, you should be able to just let the wizard do its thing. My final, optimized, spinning logo weighs in at a pretty good 11K. If you're not happy with the final result, re-run the wizard and tweak some of the settings. Some of the biggest savings can be achieved by lowering the color depth. I saved the logo with 64 colors, but I probably could have gone lower without sacrificing too much of the image's quality. You should spend a little time getting to know the animation software. Most of the packages I've tried are fairly easy to use and come with pretty extensive online help.

That's it. I invite you to play around with some text and some different shapes in Corel DRAW!. Try adding a bevel (use the last tab in the Extrude dialog box), or adding a second and third light, etc. Extrude your images to different depths and try filling them with textures as well as solid colors. Pretty soon you'll be wowing the visitors at your web site with all manner of spinning and moving logos and buttons.

3D Studio Layout - Portfolio Layout

Hello

Today i will create Tutorial Number 145 from 500 Tutorial Marathon
I will show you how to create a portfolio layout

Let's start with a new document with the following settings
760x770 pixels , and with a white background

Duplicate the background layer ( to duplicate the layer please be sure you have the layer selected , then press CTRL+J )
With this new layer selected , go to Filter > noise > Add noise and use the following settings :

Then Press CTRL+I to invert the colors. you will have a black background. do not worry. this is normal.
Create a new layer above this last layer ( to create a new layer press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+N )

Change the foreground color to : #f3b502
and the background color to : #da5d03

then with gradient tool draw a line from the top of your canvas to the bottom.

After you will release the mouse button , please change the blending mode for this layer to difference

Select Rounded Rectangle tool , and crate a white shape

Then with the same tool create another shape, this time create this shape a little smaller, and with a light gray #ebebeb

Now we will load the selection for the small gray shape. to load the selection hold down the CTRL key down , and with left mouse button , click on the layer thumbnail like in the following image

You can see a selection around the small gray shape

Create a new layer ( press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+N ) , then press on D. this action will reset the colors to black and white

now go to Filter > render > clouds

you will see some nice clouds on your layout

Press CTRL+D to deselect , then lower the opacity of this layer with clouds to 40 %

This is my result

Now please select all the layers except background layer, and press on CTRL+E ( this shortcut action will merge all the layers into a single one )

I have created for you a nice set of brushes. It is available on www.photo-shop-brush.com
Please download the brush set and load it in photoshop

Then with the first brush from this set, create the following drawings

Now select Eraser tool and with a small brush delete some parts of the layer until you have the same result like mine

Now i will add another new layer ( press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+N ) and i will use a single brush from Talk-Mania Big-Pack
if you don't know in this pack you have over 4000 different brushes in 3 different sizes ( almost 12.000 brushes )
In case you don't have the big pack i recommend you to buy it, because it will save a lot of precious time.

For example i am creating this layout in less then 20 minutes with the help of this pack. ( and i need over one hour to write it here for you - LOL )

After i have played a few seconds this is my result

Now i will place a 3D rendering with a nice 3D truck
In the same time i will also some text on my layout with type tool

Smooth, rounded portfolio layout

In this tutorial you will learn how to design a smooth, rounded portfolio layout.
Designing a layout is pretty easy when you have your idea written in your head, or on paper.
Sometimes even a simple thing looks good. The old one: “Less is more”
This is what this tutorial is.
Simple and cool looking smooth portfolio layout.

1. Make a new document. 800 x 550 px, background color set to #5F4545.

2. Make a new layer. Use Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and make a selection 760 x 500 pixels.
Now go to Select -> Modify -> Smooth, set 10 as sample radius. This will make rounded corners on our selection.
Fill it with #818181.
CTRL + D to deselect and place layer like on picture below.

Add following layer style to this layer.

Drop Shadow

3. Again, make a new layer. Use Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and make a selection 700 x 480 pixels.
Now go to Select -> Modify -> Smooth, set 10 as sample radius. This will make rounded corners on our selection.
Fill it with #B3B3B3.
CTRL + D to deselect and add the same layer style as in step 2.
Place this layer like on picture below.

4. Now, one more time, make a new layer. Use Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and make a selection 650 x 460 pixels.
Now go to Select -> Modify -> Smooth, set 10 as sample radius. This will make rounded corners on our selection.
Fill it with #FFFFFF.
CTRL + D to deselect and add the same layer style as in step 2,3.
Place this layer like on picture below.

5. Ok, main part is over. Now, we will add navigation buttons.
So make new layer. Using Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) make selection 20 x 50 pixels.
Go to Select -> Modify -> Smooth, enter 2 a sample radius. This will make our buttons rounded.
Fill it with white and place like on picture below.

Add some text to this button (I used Verdana,14, bold). Your can rotate it by pressing CTRL + T.

With same technique add other buttons.

6. Now we will add some boxes.
Make a new layer. Make a selection 433 x 262. Fill it with any color.
Add this style:

Stroke

Use color: #DCDADA

Place it like here:

Here you can put your latest work screenshot. That’s why I added “latest work” text. You’ve learnt how to rotate text in step 5.

7. Again, make new layer, make new selection 500 x 150. Fill it with #E5E3E3, deselect and place like below:

I also added text.

8. Now, let’s add some site title.
Write some text. Rotate it as in step 5 and add style like in step 2. Here’s where I placed it!

9. I assume you all know hoe to write a text in Photoshop. Here’s how it looks like with some text.

10. Finally, I added some brush shape. I think I got these brushes from pixelchick.dk.

Portfolio Web Layout

1. Make a 560×560 Photoshop document and then make a rounded rectangle with a radius of 15 pixels

2. Make a smaller brown rectangle for the content area

3. And a thing light brown one for the menu bar

4. A light grey rectangle for the header

5. Choose the custom shape, with the arrow pointing to it

6. Create a red version of the shape behing the brown rectangle, and you’ve finished!

Layout which you can use to express yourself on the internet.
To show people who you are and what you are.

1. Create a new document, width 600 px, height 600 px, background color - white.
2. Make a new layer.Name it header.
By using Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) with width 580 px and height 110 px make a
selection like on picture below.

Fill it with some color.

3. Add following layer styles to your header layer

Drop Shadow

Inner Shadow

Bevel and Emboss

Color Overlay
Use this color: #EDEDED

Stroke

Hit OK and proceed to next step.

4. Now hold CTRL and click on your header layer to make a selection around it.
Go to Select -> Modify -> Contract. Type 6 in contract box. Hit OK.

You should now have something like this.

Now, once again go to Select -> Modify -> Contract, but now enter 1 in contract value.
Make a new layer, call it header fill - this will be our fill of our header.
Fill this layer with white color.

Now, I’ used an image which I had from earlier on my computer as a header fill.
You could use mine or you can make your own or whatever you like.
Here’s mine image.

If you’re using my image, open it up in photoshop and then copy it to your layout file.
Place here, over the header fill layer by using your mouse or keyboard arrows.

5. We are done with header. Now we will add a placeholder for site title and also a site title text.
Grab Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), width 125 px, height 15 px. Place it like on picture below and click on header layer.

Make sure that you are on header layer and fill with any color.
Move your header layer above the header fill image in layers window.

Now by using Horizontal Type Tool (T) add some text. I used font 04b08.

6. That’s it with header part. Now we will add navigation buttons.
So, pick up rectangular marquee tool (m) and make a selection, width 80 px, height 15 px.

Place you selection like on picture below.

Make a new layer and fill your selection with any color. Now, CTRL + D to deselect and apply the same layer styles as in header.
Copy your layer for 4-5 times and place them like on picture below.

Add some text to your buttons. I used font 04b08.

7. Now, we will make a box where our fresh content will be. Make it like you’ve made header.
Make a selection 440×410 pixels. Fill with any color, add the same layer styles as in header or navigation. Go to Select -> Modify -> Contract, 6 pixels contract.
Hit Delete and CTRL+D to deselect. Place your layer like on picture below.

Now, make a new layer. Make a selection using Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), width 426 px, height 25. Fill this selection with #EDEDED.
Hit CTRL + D to deselect and place your layer like on picture below.

Make new layer again and with Pencil Tool (B) make a dotted line. (Set size of pencil to 1 pixel and paint every second pixel).
Also, I’ve added some text. I think you all know how to add text in photoshop. Don’t you?

Now we will add sideboxes.

8. Make new layer, and make a selection width 130 px, height 180 px, fill with any color and add the same layer styles as in header.
Go to Select->Modify->Contract. enter 6 as cotract value. Deselect
Now make new layer. Make a selection, width 115px, height 25px. Fill it with #EDEDED. Place it like on picture below.
Again, make new layer and add a dotted line. I think you know how to do that.

Now, make another sidebox. Place it below first sidebox.
That’s it. You’ve got a layout that’s ready to be sliced.

Photoshop Create a 3 Column Gaming Template in Photoshop Tutorial

Step 1:
Let’s start out by creating a new file. I used a 997×1200 pixels canvas set at 72dpi, and I filled my background with a white color. Then on your tools palette set the foreground color to #001F59 color shade.

Step 2:
Create a new layer and using the Rectangle Tool draw a rectangle with an exact size of 997×117 px and 001F59 color shade.

Step 3:
Select your Horizontal Type Tool and above your screen under the options palette set the font family to Eurostile, bold, 24 pt, crisp and white for color. In a new text layer type your website name.

Step 4:
Under Layer Style(Layer > Layer Style) add a Gradient Overlay blending option to your dark blue rectangle layer.

Step 5:
Now add your slogan with the same font settings but size 12 pt.

Step 6:
Next to your name leave a space for a leaderboard advertisement.

Today i will create Tutorial Number 148 from 500 Tutorial Marathon
I will show you how to create a clean hosting layout.

As usual let's start with a new document. Size of your document should be 760X770 pixels.
With Ellipse Tool create 4 shapes like mine. I will add some layer styles alone, so you can see better what i am making. In case you like this layer styles you can find them in our latest release : 3D Logo creator

Now for the Orange , red and Blue shape , please add the following layer style

Now with Type tool add alone some text.. This is very simple task, and i am sure everybody know how to do it. . You can see also that i have used a image with a 3D server from my photo stock collection

Please download the following set of brushes from Photo-Shop-Brush
Load the brushes in photoshop, then create a new layer under the server layer. To create a new layer you can press ( CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+N ) in teh same time
With a random could brush from this set of brushes, make some drawings on your layout. I have used a single brush. this is my result:

With Rectangle tool , you can create 3 small shapes:

For all this shapes you can add some layer styles. Here are my settings for the first layer style

Then with a white color i have created another circle. ( smaller this time )

Duplicate this 2 shapes a few times , and place it on your layout where you think it look good

add some details on your layout. Be sure you place all this details on a new layer

[2]-Now Open any image of Heart with the help of Ctrl+O & then adjust with the help of Move Tool

[3]-Now Make Duplicate Layer with the help of Ctrl+J & your Layer Pallete should look as shown below

Digital Blast Tutorial

Hey, this is my first tutorial and first post and I've not got to know what this board's like yet so go easy

Okay then we're gonna make a sort of Digital Blast thingy a bit like this:

If you follow it to the letter then it won't look exactly like this because I used a couple more blending options, swapped the layers, Radial Zoom Blur and Plastic Wrap

1. Create a new document 500x500px

2. Grab the gradient tool and set it on the rainbow setting (second to last on the pre sets). Create loads of linear gradients that all converge in the centre. You should get something that looks a little like this:

3. Now go Image>Adjustments>Hue Saturation (or press Ctrl+U) and use these settings. You should get something that looks a little like this:

4. Make a duplicate of this layer (right click on it in the layers panel and click 'Duplicate Layer'.

5. Now on the lower layer go to Filter>Pixelate>Mosaic with a cell size of 5. and you should get something like this:

6. Now go Filter>Stylize>Find Edges. Now invert it by pressing Ctrl+I and you should get something like this:

7. Now drag the original layer to the top and use an eraser with a soft brush on size 375. Leave the opacity and flow at 100%. Click twice in the centre of your image. Now do the same with the brush settings at size: 580px, the opacity: 80% and the flow: 50%. You should get something like this:

NB - This just gives you the basic form of the image, now just play around with duplicate layers and blending options until you get something you like.

Using Pen Tool to crop out items (beginner)

Step One: Open the selected image you want to remove something from.

Step Two: Zoom In, Select Pen Tool, and start "outlining" the wanted selection.

Step Three: Close Path by returning the path to its start, Then Click on the "Path" Tab next to Layers. Right Click on Work Path Layer, Make Selection, Feather - 0 pixels.

Step Four: Now with your Item selected, Copy Selection and either paste on a new layer, or create a new document(will be sized to whats on your clipboard) and put it there!

I use this technique alot, I hope some may find it helpfull.

Abstract Shine Animation with Photoshop and ImageReady

Few days ago, I was playing with Photoshop and ImageReady, and I came up with something really delicious :). I was trying to make an animated Display Picture or Avatar for Windows Live Messenger 9 (which supports recently animated avatars). So I mastered an amazing technique that I’m going over step by step below. Note that this is an advanced tutorial because it involves the usage of Pen Tool, Layer Mask and Tween (ImageReady). Here’s what we’ll be working on

Let’s start:

Step 1

Open Adobe Photoshop and press CTRL + N to create a new image:

Step 2

Set the background color to #000000 (black) and the foreground to #122c52.

Step 3

Filter > Render > Clouds to get something like the following:

Step 4

Select the Pen Tool, make sure the “Paths” option is selected in the toolbar. Draw the following shape:

CTRL + SHIFT + N to create a new layer (Layer 2).

Step 6

Select the Brush Tool, set the Foreground color to #ffffff (white), master diameter to 4px and hardness to 100%.

Make sure your selected brush supports Simulating Pressures:

Select the Pen Tool again, right click on the image and press Stroke Path…

Step 8

Set the following options in the Stroke Path dialog:

CTRL + SHIFT + N to create the third layer.

Step 10

Select the Brush Tool again and increase the Master Diameter to 5px.

Step 11

Right click again on the image and press the stroke path. Then apply the same options.

Step 12

Hide the Layer 3 by unsetting the eye in the layers panel:

Select the Layer 2 from the Layers panel. Then, Layers > Layer Style > Blending Options… and set the following settings (Outer Glow and Color Overlay):

You will get something simillar to this (do not remove the pen tool selection):

Now, we’re done with Photoshop, we’ll start editing with ImageReady:

ImageReady will open. Window > Workplace > Default Workplace to arrange your windows.

Window > Animation to show the animation window:

Now, we will show the Layer 3 (that we already hided in Photoshop) by setting the eye back.

Be careful here!!! Drag the Layer 3 in the Layers Panel to the “Add a mask” button in the bottom to create a mask of that layer. Select the Brush tool and clean up the white area in the mask. Then unset the link between the layer preview and the mask:

Here’s the tricky part. Although it can be done in many ways, but i find this way the easiest. Select the Brush Tool (I think it’s already selected :)), set the foreground color to #ffffff (white) and select the following Brush:

Make sure the mask is selected! draw with you free hand a line like this (Note that you will only see this line in the Mask preview in the layer panel):

You should see in the Layers panel the following:

Let’s start with the animation now. Press the 1st Frame in the Animation windows and press “Duplicate current frame” icon to duplicate the layers state.

Now make sure the the mask of the layer 3 is selected, select the Move tool and Press Shirt + Right like 25 times to reach the following state:

So, we have moved the line mask from left to right. It’s time to animate it! The frame 2 is selected, hold CTRL and click on frame 1 to make them both selected. Then press the Tween icon:

Apply the following Tween settings:

A set of frames will be created for you. Select the 1st frame, scroll to the end, hold SHIFT and click the last frame. You will have all the Frames selected. Click the delay drop down on any of the selected frames and choose Other:

Enter 0.03 seconds as a delay between the frames:

Now select the last Frame alone by clicking on it, and set its delay to 5 seconds:

We’re done. It’s time to save the animation as gif. Make sure the format in the "Optimize" panel is GIF:

Open it with Firefox, because Firefox renders the Gif formats faster than Internet Explorer (I’m not sure about Safari or other browsers).

Clean Background

This tutorial will teach you how to create a clean looking background in photoshop. This tutorial is very quick and easy. Though there are a lot of steps, they are all very simple ones.

The tutorial

1. Go to File > New and create a new document. I created mine with the size of 1024x768 pixels.

2. Make sure that it is colored white [ #FFFFFF ] You can use the Paint Bucket Tool to do so if it is not.

3. Create a new layer.

4. Select the Rectangular marquee tool. . Select an area at random on your canvas. You can make it whatever size you wish.

5. With the area still selected, head to Select > Modify > Feather. Edit the setting so it is "5" and confirm it.

6. Now you'll want to pick a color of your choice. For this image, I used various shades of green, but you can use whatever colors you want. If you want to use what I used, go ahead and use the paint bucket tool to fill the selected area to color B2C3AC. [ Note: this tutorial works best with light colors. ]

7. Now, you'll want to repeat steps 3-6 about a dozen times. Make sure that you make the selections at different sizes with this tool so they cover most of the canvas, but make sure to leave a bit of white area leftover on the canvas to give it a "creamy" effect.

Also, when you create new layers, you'll want to lower their opacity a bit as you'll want the filled selections to overlap each other a bit. To do this, on each new layer right click on the layer in the layers window and select blending options. Lower the blending options to your desired amount, but around 40-70 is usually good.

When you are done, it should look similar to the image below.

8. Go to Layer > Flaten Image

9. Duplicate the layer.

10. Make sure the top layer is selected. Select Filter > Distort > Polar Cordinates. Tick the Polar to Rectangular box and confirm.

11. Right click on the top layer in the layers menu and select blending options. Set the blending mode to Hard Light.

12. Flatten your layers. [ Layer > Flaten ]

13. Duplicate the layer again. Go to blending optinons. Set the blending mode to Dark Light.

14. Flatten the image once more and duplicate the layer.

15. On the first bottom layer, Go to Filter > Distort > Twirl. Set the angle to 377

16. On the second layer, go to Filter > Distort > Twirl. Set the angle to -517.

17. Set the top layer's blend mode to lighten.

...And you're done! Well, almost! The rest is up to you. You can add gradients then do the color overlay setting for a more vivid coloring, add images to your background, text, or whatever else you want. Below is the finished product that I created.

Easy Abstract Photoshop Tutorial

This tutorial will show how to create a very simple abstract shape using a few brushes and effects. For this tutorial I will be using Adobe Photoshop CS3. If you have an older version of Adobe Photoshop, you may still be able to follow this tutorial.

Keep in mind that it would be nearly impossible to duplicate this exact object, but this tutorial should give a guide to creating your own unique object. You should end up with something like this.

The first thing we need to do is download the brush set for this tutorial. You can download the free Trance Brushes from Brusheezy.com by clicking here..

After you download the brushes, extract the .abr file from the .zip and save it.

Open Adobe Photoshop and create a new document 700×700.

Fill the background layer with black (#000000) and select the brush tool.

Load the brush set that you just downloaded by clicking the drop down next to the brush > the arrow point right > then the load option.

Select the Trance Brushes and load them. You will see the new brushes appear at the bottom of the brush set.

Reset the color swatches so that white is the foreground color and black is the background color. Create a new layer and use some of the brushes to create an abstract shape. When you are painting with these brushes, do not drag the mouse like you normally would. Instead click once to create the shape. There is really no science to this. First I will use brush 305 to create this.

Next I will add a few more with #213.

Then I will use 215 to make a tail.

To complete this shape I will dab a couple times with the brushe that is numbered 380 for me.

Like I said before, there is no set way to do this, just come up with a shape you like. Now to add a little bit of color I will apple a purple glow. Right click on the layer in the layers pallet and select blending options.

Apply an outer glow using the color #7200ff.

I also added an inner glow using the same color #7200ff.

Apply the changes and you should get something like this.

Now we are going to distort the image using the polar coordinate filter. Click Filter > Distort > Polar coordinates.

Make sure that Rectangular to Polar is selected and click ok

You will get something like this.

Where the object is located on the canvas will effect how it is distorted. If you do not like the way it came out, undo the filter and move the object. Then try to apply the filter again. Mine looks ok, but I think it is a little blurry.

I am going to apply the Smart Sharpen filter to sharpen up the image. Click Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen.

You will have to play with the settings to see what looks the best for you, or you could skip this step completely. Here is what I used.

This is what my image looks like now.

That is all it takes to create a simple abstract shape using brushes. If you do a search online you can some great free brushes to play around with. You could also add some text to this and make into a background or something.
